Physical Dysfunction II Lecture/Lab
In Phys Dys 1240, the lecture portion, we continued to study additional adult disabilities to learn: the effects of dysfunction on occupational habits and occupational roles, to apply the Occupational Therapy process, problem-solve ideas, become introduced to rehabilitation assessment, and learn about treatment techniques and community resources. During Phys Dys 1250, the lab section, we learned via practical application and active learning of the lecture content.
Service Learning: Clinic
For this service project we participated in Salt Lake Community College's PT/OT clinic. I was able to participate in four physical dysfunction clinic sessions and had the opportunity to lead two of them. The clients we saw had various physical dysfunction diagnoses. As a lead I had the responsibility of planning a 45 minute treatment session, carrying out my plan with the client, and writing the documentation afterwards.
Participating in clinic was very beneficial to me because I was able to practice what I have learned in class and see what my role is as an OTA. It was nice to get the practice of looking through a client's evaluation and goals and coming up with interventions based on what we read. Before even meeting the client's I would have to come up with a plan to help them. I did a lot of research on different diagnoses and interventions that would be appropriate for them. It was nice to work with real clients and see if the interventions we came up with would actually help them. I had to practice using therapeutic use of self during the treatment sessions and tried to implement other techniques I had learned to make the sessions run smoothly. It was helpful to get feedback from the clients, classmates that acted as co-leads, and the teacher supervising. I learned so much from the experiences I had in clinic. I feel like these experiences have done a lot to prepare me for the future when I'll be doing all of this on my own, without supervision or assistance from others.
